MHT CET CAP Round Guide 2026: Everything You Need to Know
Scoring well in the MHT CET is only half the battle. The other half is navigating the Centralized Admission Process (CAP) successfully. The CAP rounds determine which college and branch you ultimately secure. Every year, students with high percentiles lose out on top colleges simply because they do not understand the CAP process, fail to produce the correct documents, or make mistakes during choice filling. This guide breaks down the entire process so you know exactly what to expect.
What is the CAP Process?
The Centralized Admission Process (CAP) is administered by the State Common Entrance Test Cell, Maharashtra. It is a single, unified system that allocates seats in engineering (B.E./B.Tech), pharmacy, and other professional courses across all government, government-aided, and private unaided colleges in the state. Instead of applying to individual colleges, you apply through the CAP portal, submit your preferences, and the system allots seats based on merit (your percentile) and your reservation category.
Typically, the CET Cell conducts three regular CAP rounds, followed by spot or institute-level rounds for vacant seats. Most of the top colleges fill their seats within the first two rounds.
CAP Registration & Document Verification
The process begins shortly after the MHT CET results are declared. You must register online on the official CET Cell portal and upload your documents. The CET Cell will verify these documents either via e-Scrutiny (online) or physical scrutiny at designated Setu Suvidha Kendras (FC centers). Only students whose documents are successfully verified are included in the final merit list and are eligible for choice filling.
While the exact list changes slightly each year, here are the documents typically required for an OPEN category student from Maharashtra:
- MHT CET 2026 Scorecard
- SSC (10th) Marksheet
- HSC (12th) Marksheet
- School Leaving Certificate or Domicile Certificate (proof of nationality and Maharashtra domicile)
If you are applying under a reserved category (OBC, SC, ST, NT, etc.), you will additionally need:
- Caste Certificate
- Caste Validity Certificate (crucial — start this process early)
- Non-Creamy Layer Certificate (valid up to March 2027) — not required for SC/ST
If applying for EWS or TFWS (Tuition Fee Waiver Scheme), you need the respective Income Certificate. Always confirm the exact requirements with the official DTE notification.
Choice Filling: How to Approach It
After the final merit list is published, the option form opens. You can fill in 1 to 300 choices of college-branch combinations. This is the most critical step. The system evaluates your list from top to bottom and gives you the highest preference available at your merit number.
Before filling out the official form, you should have your list ready. Use our Predictor tool to generate a realistic list, and read our detailed guide on How to Build Your College Preference List. Remember, if you are allotted your Priority 1 choice, it is automatically "Auto-Freezed," and you must take admission. Therefore, make sure Priority 1 is truly your dream college.
Seat Allotment & Acceptance (Freeze, Float, Slide)
Once the allotment is published, you have three options if you are allotted a seat (other than Priority 1):
- Freeze: You are happy with the allotted college and do not want to participate in further rounds. You pay the seat acceptance fee and report to the college.
- Float (Betterment): You accept the current seat but wish to participate in the next round to see if you get a higher preference. If you get a better allotment in Round 2, the Round 1 seat is cancelled. If not, you retain the Round 1 seat.
- Slide: Similar to float, but you are looking for a better branch within the same college you were allotted.
If you choose Float or Slide, you still have to pay the seat acceptance fee online to hold the seat. If you do not pay, you lose the allotted seat and are pushed out of the regular rounds.
Tips for a Smooth CAP Experience
- Gather documents early: Do not wait for results. Obtaining Caste Validity and Non-Creamy Layer certificates can take weeks.
- Monitor the official website: Deadlines are strict. Missing a registration deadline or seat acceptance window by one minute can cost you an academic year. Always rely on cetcell.mahacet.org for official dates.
- Use prediction tools to plan: Don't build your option form blind. Use our tools to understand historical trends.
- Understand category nuances: Remember that OPEN seats are available to everyone (including reserved categories if they score high enough), but reserved seats are exclusively for those categories.
